Downtown Credo Provides Coffee and a Cause to the Orlando Community

By in Bars and Coffeehouses, Community Events on February 24, 2011

As you know, we here at AMPlified Culture are all about supporting local businesses. So when I came across a new local coffeehouse in College Park I was stoked. Then when I found out they had a unique kind of business model that focuses on giving back to the Orlando community, I was even more thrilled to be able to spread the word.

I’m talking about this great little place called Downtown Credo. I actually kind of just stumbled upon them one day after having lunch. And since there are so few coffeehouses still open in the Orlando area, which by the way is just so disappointing, I was super surprised at my find. The place, which opened around November of last year, has a clean and comfortable vibe with contemporary decor and fun pops of red. As for the menu they keep it simple by only serving regular drip coffee and espressos and here was the real surprise for me. . .they are a donations only establishment. That’s right, you get to decide how much you pay for your coffee. But since Credo is dedicated to a cause, we hope most people give a little extra when they are ready to check out.

So what’s their cause you ask? Well the simple answer is the city of Orlando and the people in it. Downtown Credo focuses on bringing Orlando and its citizens to a better place, and their “credo” which stresses that individuals should not merely exist but live a life of meaning and purpose, fulfillment and joy, is a philosophy I’m sure many people would agree with. The organization’s headquarters are actually at the coffeehouse and they work with numerous organizations within our city such as the downtown Boys and Girls Club, BETA House, New Image Youth CenterKeeping Orlando Beautiful and Green Up Orlando. The coffeehouse also hosts art shows, documentary viewings, open mic nights, book discussion groups, and for those of you who like to surf the web while you drink your coffee, free wifi.

So the next time you need a place to chill for a bit, head over to Downtown Credo and support the community while getting your cup of joe!

Edited 3/9: Our friend Stephan over at Downtown Credo let us know that we were under a misconception about the drinks they can service after our last visit. They can actually make lattes, pour-over coffee, hot chocolate, and teas as well. We are so thrilled they have an even bigger selection than originally thought! Thanks for keeping us straight Stephan.

Thanks for coming in on that rainy Saturday! I wanted to clarify on the menu front. We specialize in coffee drinks from french presses, drip, and pour-over, to all espresso and latte drinks, hot chocolates, and teas. We will make you whatever you like. I'm so glad you all are amplifying the culture here in Orlando and thanks for including us as part of your work. Cheers!

Although the shop only accepts donations, many people give much more than the suggested amount because of the good vibes!

I'd love to pay them a visit when I am in Orlando (next month), the place indeed looks very nice, their website is currently not active though: downtowncredo.com – Maybe Stephan can update us when it's coming back? :) Thanks in advance.
